Abstract
Objectives £º This study aimed to compare the outcomes between voluntary and involuntary patients participating in an inpatient alcoholism treatment program.

Methods £º Subjects were 83 persons diagnosed with alcohol dependence and participating in the treatment program at Hangang Sacred Heart hospital between January 2006 and December 2008. We followed up with the subjects via face-to-face or telephone interviews and reviewed their medical records to obtain data on each hospitalization process, type of discharge, and patient attitude during treatment.

Results £º We were able to follow up with 34 of the 83 subjects, finding no significant differences regarding abstinence related to type of admission or type of discharge. The voluntary and involuntary patient groups showed no statistically significant differences in their behavioral changes toward their families. Furthermore, patients with cooperative attitudes during treatment and patients with uncooperative attitudes showed no significant differences in their abstinence rates

Conclusion : This study suggests that neither type of admission nor attitude toward the treatment program can predict a patient¡¯s alcohol abstinence outcome after discharge.
